About Hartfield House

Hartfield House complex comprises a Visit Scotland 4* hostel which sleeps 31 people, The Bunkhouse, a self contained building which sleeps 19 people, and a wedding venue that can be hired out. Hartfield House Hostel is situated within the former hunting lodge on the Applecross Estate, and is owned and run as a hostel by Hartfield Applecross Limited, a subsidiary of the Applecross Trust.

We are aiming to be more environmental at Hartfield to ensure we put back as much as we take. Our Bunkhouse is solar powered - you will see the field of solar panels adjacent to the building. We use plant based UK sourced cleaning materials and we buy in bulk which cuts down on our carbon footprint and our use of plastic. We have reusable soap and washing up dispensers. We have plant based and silicon cleaning utensils for guests. We only stock biodegradable tea and coffee for guest use.

We compost food waste and have recycling for cardboard (which we give to the school for 'no dig' beds), glass bottles and the usual plastics and tins. We have a separate composter for dog waste and provide compostable dog waste bags for all guests with dogs.

We use Who Gives a Crap toilet rolls. Not only are they recycled paper, 50% of profits go to providing better sanitation in developong countries. We use plant based shampoos and conditioners in our ensuite rooms. And we provide plant based biodegradable sanitary products free of charge in our bathrooms.

We still have a long way to go but we are making some headway and we would appreciate your input, whether that is just adhering to our recycling and composting policies, or offering advice on how we could improve.

The Hartfield House Team

At Hartfield House hostel in Applecross we have a loyal team who are passionate about the area and the outdoors and provide a fantastic personal service to our guests. Our hostel staff are always willing to go that extra mile in order to make your stay special and possess some exceptional skills that really make Hartfield House unique.

Our housekeeping team are in the building from 0830 each morning until approximately 1400, and are happy to help with any issue. We have a maintenance officer, Robert, who is on site and on call during the course of the week. And we have a reception team that are on the front desk from 1600 until 2100 each evening. Overnight we have staff in the on site staff accommodation, and the hostel manager lives next door.

Zuzu is our Finance Manager and is also very knowlegeable about the local area, especially wild swimming spots.

Peter is our gardener and is responsble for the lovely flowers we now have to the front of the building. He is tasked with the big job of sorting out our huge grounds over the next few years.

Jess is our Operations Manager. She is on site most of the time and lives close by if there is an emergency of any kind.
